THE
CHALLENGE
CHALLENGE
For the first time in its history, humanity faces an enormous challenge: to provide food, health, and well-being for a growing global population through sustainable production systems.
Although global food and pharmaceutical production have generally kept pace with population growth, today more than 820 million people lack sufficient food, and many more consume diets that are of low quality or excessive in quantity. At the same time, millions of people lack equitable access to essential medicines and quality treatments.

Unhealthy diets now pose a greater risk of morbidity and mortality than alcohol, drug and tobacco use, COVID, or all of them combined. Similarly, the lack of access to adequate medicines and an over-reliance on pharmaceuticals within unsustainable systems also represent significant threats to global health and planetary sustainability.
The global production of food and medicine threatens climate stability and ecosystem resilience, serving as a primary driver of environmental degradation and the transgression of planetary boundaries. Collectively, the outcome is critical. A radical transformation of the global food and pharmaceutical systems is urgently needed.
Without action, the world risks failing to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the commitments of the Paris Agreement. Today’s children will inherit a severely degraded planet, with a population increasingly affected by malnutrition, preventable diseases, and unequal access to the essential resources for a healthy life.
